In a significant political move, the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Conrad Sangma, has decided to withdraw its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, citing concerns over the worsening law and order situation. The NPP, which holds seven seats in the 60-member legislative assembly, is pulling out of the coalition, but this is unlikely to lead to an immediate collapse of the government. The BJP still maintains a clear majority with 32 seats.
This decision follows the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA), which also withdrew its support in August 2023, further deepening tensions within the ruling alliance. However, despite these withdrawals, the BJP’s position in the state government remains secure for now.
Current Seat Distribution in the Manipur Legislative Assembly:
- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): 32 seats
- Naga People’s Front (NPF): 5 seats
- National People’s Party (NPP): 7 seats
- Janata Dal (United) [JDU]: 6 seats
- Indian National Congress (INC): 5 seats
- Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA): 2 seats
- Independents (IND): 3 seats
Despite the withdrawal of nine MLAs (from NPP and KPA), the BJP retains a commanding majority with 32 seats, which ensures the government’s stability. Additionally, the BJP continues to have the support of allies like the Janata Dal (United) with six seats, Naga People’s Front with five seats, and three independent legislators, further consolidating its control in the assembly.
While internal tensions within the coalition grow, with key allies pulling out, the BJP remains firmly in power in Manipur.
